Egypt Consultancy: Preparation of and Consultancy Services for the Egyptian-German High Level Joint Committee on Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Environmental Protection (JC)

Background: The governments of Egypt and Germany are aiming to expand their cooperation on issues of climate change and dissemination of renewable energy applications and energy efficiency technologies. With this aim in mind, the two countries wish to establish an Egyptian-German High Level Joint Committee (JC) on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency and Environmental Protection.

The objective of the Joint Committee shall be to accelerate and enhance the bilateral cooperation between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Federal Republic of Germany in the Energy Sector of Egypt, in particular in the fields of Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Environmental Protection.

Objective and Approach: IREES was commissioned by the GTZ to deliver input and background information for the preparatory workshop of the High Level Joint Committee and elaborate possible solutions to the open topics on energy efficiency and renewable energy. The study included the following fields of analysis:

• Sectoral Drivers of Energy Demand in Egypt
• Past, Present and Future Energy Demand Structure
• Boundary conditions and present policies of energy use and conversion in Egypt
• Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Potentials
• Recommendations for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy critical issues for the High Level JC working groups
