Dr. Julian Baehr
Dr Julian Baehr conducts research into the carbon footprint of industrial production and its implementation in European regulation. From 2019 to 2021, he studied on the international, EIT RawMaterials-accredited Master’s programme ‘Advanced Materials: Innovative Recycling’. EIT RawMaterials is one of the innovation communities of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), an institution of the European Union. He undertook his studies equally at FCT NOVA in Lisbon and at TU Darmstadt, graduating with a double degree (M.Sc.). The programme combined the fundamentals of materials and environmental engineering with the topics of the circular economy, life cycle assessment (LCA) and critical raw materials.
From 2022 to 2025, he undertook his PhD in the Department of Material Flow Management and Resource Economics at TU Darmstadt. His research focused on climate reporting within the framework of the European Green Deal, in particular on its harmonisation and the use of AI methods to improve reporting efficiency. In 2025, he completed a traineeship at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Petten (Netherlands). There, he contributed to the scientific support for the implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in the steel, cement and fertiliser sectors.
Dr Baehr originally studied pharmacy at the University of Münster. During his clinical year, he undertook research at the University of Otago in Dunedin (New Zealand), and in 2019 he was granted his licence to practise as a pharmacist. His two areas of training have shaped his professional focus: the sustainability assessment of chemical-pharmaceutical and energy-intensive industries. He has been contributing this expertise to IREES since October 2026 as a senior researcher in the Climate-Neutral Industry and Business division.
