From digital heat data to informed resident engagement

Last week, our colleague Antonia Kranz presented insights from our KomDat research project at the IST 2026 Conference in Zurich. Under this year’s theme “Hope – in challenging times”, the conference brought together the international sustainability transitions research community to discuss how socio-technical systems can be transformed towards greater environmental sustainability and social justice.

The KomDat research project, carried out together with Fraunhofer IOSB, SAMSON KT-Elektronik and senercon GmbH,  explores how data and communication between district heating providers, building owners and residents can be better connected to support the efficient and transparent operation of district heating systems. Against this broader transition perspective, the presentation focused on the digitalisation of district heating and addressed a central question: How can digital heat consumption data become actionable for residents?

1.) Making data available is only the first step. Digital consumption data need to be understandable, contextualised and linked to concrete actions within residents’ sphere of control.

2.) Communication bridges data and action. Timely prompts, actionable feedback and self-monitoring can create a voluntary and privacy-compatible pathway.

3.) Realising the potential of digitalisation requires a socio-technical perspective. Digital tools alone do not lead to behavioural change. Their impact depends on how technology and communication are embedded in residents’ everyday practices and support their ability to act.
