Think globally – act locally in Karlsruhe
“Think globally – act locally in Karlsruhe”: RegioCOP30 brings COP30 to Karlsruhe – and IREES is there with input on climate communication, rapid building renovation, and the COP negotiations.
“Climate change is not just a global problem that the countries of the world negotiate annually to limit. Rather, we must also take more action locally – in every city. That is why IREES, together with two Karlsruhe universities and Fokus.energie e.v., has organized a regional COP30 Karlsruhe. Over the course of 10 days, we will share knowledge, stimulate discussion, and connect people with local actors and initiatives.”
IREES will be participating in the following events during the two weeks of the program:
1️⃣🤸♀️ November 11, 4:30 p.m., PH Karlsruhe Building 1: Introduction and moderation by Eberhard Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jochem and Nico Ulmer on various presentations on the topic of “How do we take action?”: “People want and need to see that their actions have an impact. When they feel that their contribution counts, change can happen.”
2️⃣🗣️12.11., 4:30 p.m., PH Karlsruhe Building 1: Sophie Lohmann, PhD on “What is missing in climate communication? – How do we reach people?”
Effective climate protection requires many people in different parts of society to demand and support change. How do we talk about the climate in order to reach people – and where are the current sticking points? Is it a lack of knowledge? Motivation? Hope? Or something else entirely?
3️⃣💡 Nov. 14, 6:30 p.m., PH Karlsruhe Building 1, Eberhard Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jochem with an interim report on COP30 and RegioCOP30 Karlsruhe
The first COP in the Amazon rainforest on the initiative of indigenous activists, climate neutrality plans from China, a step backwards for the USA, the conflict between oil-producing countries – where do the negotiations in Belém, Brazil, currently stand? Eberhard Jochem gives an interim report on consensus and dissent at COP30.
4️⃣🏠 November 19, 4:30 p.m., HKA B Building, Jana Deurer Oppen on “Renovation sprint – fast-track to energy-efficient housing”
Renovating buildings to make them more energy efficient is a key lever for climate protection – but the renovation rate has been stagnating for years. Jana Deurer Oppen shows an example of a new, innovative approach: she had her own home renovated to an Efficiency House 55 standard in just 22 days – thanks to the renovation sprint concept.
5️⃣ 🖥️ Nov. 20, 4:30 p.m., HKA, B Building, Heike Brugger on “AI and Flexibilization of Electricity Demand and More Efficient Use of Electricity”
Artificial intelligence (AI) can help make our energy demand more flexible and efficient. Intelligent analyses and forecasts adapt electricity demand to the fluctuating supply from renewable sources, which can reduce electricity peaks. The presentation highlights the current status and provides an outlook on the potential of AI in energy demand.
