The Heat Transition in Saarland: Strategy Paper Now Available

🔥The Saarland is on track to achieve a climate-neutral heat supply by 2045. Our new study, “The Heat Transition in the Saarland – Status Quo, Potential, and Areas for Action,” conducted in collaboration with FfE and IREES GmbH, outlines how this transition might unfold:

On behalf of the Saarland Ministry of Economy, Innovation, Digital Affairs, and Energy, we analyzed the potential for renewable heat sources and developed recommendations for action. The final report is intended to provide state agencies and municipalities in Saarland with concrete guidance on the heating transition. In addition to quantifying the potential for wastewater and geothermal heat utilization and modeling future heat demand trends, IREES carried out a clustering of individual areas within the project to develop heating transition strategies at the municipal and neighborhood levels.

Our potential analysis divides the Saarland into the following clusters (see map):

1️⃣ Local combination strategy for decentralized and local heating networks: Heat can be generated decentralized and fed into local distribution networks

2️⃣ Regional integration strategy for decentralized and supraregional district heating networks: Already connected to supraregional district heating networks, with a focus on regional interconnections

3️⃣ Local combination strategy with moderate district heating network options: lower district heating network potential than in Cluster 1; local networks are appropriate in specific cases

4️⃣ Local combination strategy with selective district heating network suitability: district heating networks are possible but only economically viable with high connection rates; network construction depends on local interest

5️⃣ Focus on decentralized renewable energy: decentralized heat generation using renewable energy sources

💡 This provides a strategy for every part of Saarland to optimally advance the heat transition based on local conditions.

In addition, IREES was responsible for developing recommendations for action and measures at the state and municipal levels to implement the technical heat transition strategies.

The comprehensive data collection will soon be made available to Saarland municipalities.
