Scenario worlds for infrastructures in the context of energy system transformation

Scenario-based analysis of infrastructure requirements in the context of energy system transformation and effects on their financing and planning

Client

Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi)

Duration October 2018 – December 2020

Background

The focus of this project is the interaction between different infrastructures such as electricity, gas, district heating networks, etc. in different scenarios dealing with the German energy transition that is the decarbonisation of the Germany energy market. The technical and economic parameters, age, design and implementation time, regulatory framework, etc. are considered for each infrastructure and decarbonisation scenario.

Tasks of IREES

  • Analysis of the future role of energy sources and technologies in existing energy scenarios

  • Analysis of technical and economic properties of district heating and cooling infrastructure

  • Analysis of the existing stock and current planning of district heating and cooling networks
  • Future requirements for district heating and cooling depending on different transformation scenarios
