passPart2 II – Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through low-investment measures
Client Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie
Duration April 2024 – Oktober 2024
Background
A refurbishment is an opportune time to adapt the building’s energy concept by taking measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To this end, an intelligent room heating management system was installed in some offices in the Detmold district building.
Goals and results
Experiences and satisfaction with the measures were recorded in four employee surveys in 2021-2024. The group-based gamification campaign (active) was popular among employees and they changed their behavior to save energy. At the same time, they were more satisfied with the temperature and air quality. However, the campaign would have to be repeated again and again when new employees joined. The intelligent room heating management system (passive) did not change subjective comfort and satisfaction, but it did save a lot of energy. Once such a system has been installed, it continues to run even when employees change. Active measures therefore increase satisfaction with the indoor climate, but passive measures remain in place even if employees change – both measures were successful in reducing energy consumption in office spaces and are significantly cheaper than a complete refurbishment.
