Energy-efficient offices – satisfied employees
How satisfied are employees with the indoor climate at their workplace – and how can they save energy without freezing? New results on low-investment measures ⬇
Office buildings also need to save energy in order to meet climate targets – but it is essential that the comfort needs of employees and the suitability of the measures for their day-to-day work are taken into account.
In the recently completed project “passPart2 – Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through low-investment measures”, the Technische Hochschule OWL and IREES supported the refurbishment and energy-saving measures in the Lippe district building. IREES was responsible for the acceptance research and conducted four surveys among employees in 2021-2024.
Take-aways:
1️⃣🎮 A group-based gamification campaign (active) was well received by employees and they changed their behavior in such a way that energy was saved. At the same time, they were more satisfied with the temperature and air quality. However, when new employees join, the campaign would have to be repeated again and again.
2️⃣💡 An intelligent room heating management system (passive) has not changed comfort and satisfaction, but has saved a lot of energy. Once the system is installed, it continues to run even when employees change.
3️⃣ ➡ Active measures increase satisfaction with the indoor climate, but passive measures remain in place even when employees change.
4️⃣ ✅Both measures have successfully saved energy and are significantly cheaper than a complete refurbishment.
