EU approves aid scheme for climate protection contracts
On February 16, 2024, the EU Commission approved the BMWK’s funding guidelines for climate protection agreements for industry in terms of state aid. The way is now clear for the first call for funding, which will have a volume of up to €4 billion.
Climate agreements aim to decarbonise companies active in the sectors covered by the EU ETS. The climate protection agreements secure energy and CO2 prices and, in particular, promote differences in operating costs between climate-friendly and conventional production. The funding is awarded through a call for tenders and is tied to strict minimum criteria, ensuring that the funded projects make a significant contribution to the goal of climate neutrality.
IREES GmbH was significantly involved in the development of the funding program with several partners, in particular the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI, the DIW Berlin – German Institute for Economic Research, Oeko-Institut e.V. and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research PIK e.V.
