Energy concept for the educational and cultural district in Innsbruck

Client Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe AG

Duration November 2023 – June 2024

Background

The “educational and cultural quarter” in Innsbruck is characterized by various building structures. It includes both modern buildings such as the “Haus der Musik” and historical buildings such as the “Hofburg”. Geographically, the project area is located in the city center of Innsbruck. The total area of the district is around 35 hectares, although the property sizes of the cooperating partners vary greatly. The district is mainly home to institutional educational and cultural institutions. In addition, the limited spatial conditions in public spaces, the densely laid infrastructure lines and the high energy density in the city center are important factors that must be taken into account when creating the energy concept.

Goals and Results

The aim of this project is to create an energy concept for the “education and culture district” in Innsbruck. This includes a basic analysis, preliminary design planning as well as the interfaces to other planners and the municipal heat plan for the city of Innsbruck that is currently being drawn up. The client is aiming for the long-term conversion of the “educational and cultural quarter” in Innsbruck to renewable and CO2-neutral heating and cooling systems. As part of this contract, a comprehensive energy concept (heating, cooling, pipe infrastructure) is to be developed for the district described and presented as a preliminary draft to serve as a basis for further planning and implementation.
