PM2.5 reduction potential

PM2.5 reduction potential for selected source groups

Client

Umweltbundesamt

Duration  March 2026 – September 2028

Background

Germany is obliged to reduce its emissions of various air pollutants. These include PM2.5 (particulate matter) and NMVOC (volatile organic compounds). From 2030, stricter limits and guidelines will apply to further reduce pollutants. In order to enable compliance with these requirements, additional measures must be developed and their contribution to reduction must be evaluated on the basis of data.

Goals and Results

The IREES carries out projections on fuel use in the building sector in order to calculate the associated air pollutant emissions. These projections are used to derive options for measures to reduce emissions. Based on the measures developed, two possible scenarios for achieving the reduction targets are developed.

Tasks of IREES

  • Updating emission projections

  • updating NMVOC inventory and emission projections

  • developing policy options

  • deriving target scenarios
