Dr. Nico Ulmer
Nico Ulmer works as a project manager at IREES in the business unit Energy Transition and Society. In March 2024, he earned his PhD from the Leuphana University, Lueneburg, in socio linguistics with the topic of sustainability communication in the African educational context. As part of his research, he lived several years at the NM AIST University in Arusha, Tanzania, where he worked as a consultant in the field of electricity and water purification in the East African context. Before working at IREES, he was employed as a scientific employee at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, specifically in the Research and Transfer Center for Sustainability and Climate Change Management.
During his bachelor’s degree in Energy and Resource Management (B.A.), he completed a semester at the Environmental Management Department of the City of Cape Town in South Africa. In his master’s degree, he specialized in Renewable Energy Management (M.Sc.), while his master’s thesis dealt with the opportunities and barriers of renewable energies for developing countries. He is fluent in German, English and Swahili.
