Decarbonisation process heating and cooling of SMEs

Backgound

The aim of this study is to identify sustainable options for the decarbonisation of Hamburg’s economy and to make recommendations for the design of funding instruments in Hamburg that are suitable for the future. The focus of the analysis is the process heating and cooling demand, as well as its generation in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the trade, commerce and service sector and in industry. The aim is to enable local companies to safely embark on the path to climate neutrality.

Goals

First of all, an inventory analysis of the relevant sectors in Hamburg is carried out to determine which technologies have been used to date to generate process heating and cooling. The potential analysis will then determine how heating and cooling can be provided in the relevant processes in a climate-neutral way in the future. The result of the potential analysis is also the calculation of CO2 savings through alternative generation processes as well as their technical and financial economic viability. In the final step, the funding needs of Hamburg’s economy in this area will be determined and a forward-looking funding instrument derived.
