Further development of technical fundamentals for environmental and climate management and the greenhouse gas neutrality of companies
Client Umweltbundesamt (UBA)
Duration November 2023 – September 2026
Background
Both Germany and all countries at EU level have decided to become greenhouse gas neutral by 2045 or 2050 in order to curb climate change. With a share of 24% of total greenhouse gas emissions in Germany (2020), industrial companies play a crucial role. In order for the transformation towards greenhouse gas-neutral companies to succeed, climate protection in companies across Germany and the EU is being promoted through changes to the legal and institutional framework. The number of these changes ranges from the tightening of emissions trading to the increased production and use of renewable energies. Significant changes also include increased energy efficiency, the planned authorization to establish a legal definition of “climate-neutral companies” in Section 18 of the Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG) and the decarbonization of important industrial sectors and processes.
In addition, there are the CSR reporting requirement and the supply chain law through to the revision of the industrial emissions directive or the planned measures for sustainable financing and the associated EU taxonomy. In addition to the legal framework and economic factors, the drivers of climate protection in companies are also stakeholders such as customers and suppliers, who are increasingly paying attention to the effects of their actions – also because they themselves are affected by external requirements. Companies that describe their products and their manufacturing processes as greenhouse gas neutral often have this verified using private certificates and labels.
Goals and Results
This project develops assistance for companies so that they can meet the requirements of greenhouse gas neutrality.
