District heating and cooling networks enable the efficient integration of large renewable energy sources such as biomass, geothermal or solar thermal as well as the use of various forms of waste heat and free cooling. By integrating power-to-heat solutions with direct electric boilers or large heat pumps, district heating and cooling networks can provide additional flexibility as storage for increasingly volatile renewable electricity generation.
