Dr. Nico Ulmer

Nico Ulmer works as a project manager at IREES in the field of social science evaluation of energy projects and earned his PhD in March 2024 from the Leuphana University, Lueneburg, topic: sustainability communication in the African educational context. As part of his dissertation, he lived several years at the NM AIST University in Arusha, Tanzania. While abroad, Mr. Ulmer worked as a consultant in the field of electricity and water purification in the East African context. Before working at IREES, he was employed as a research assistant at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, specifically in the Research and Transfer Center for Sustainability and Climate Change Management.

During his bachelor’s degree in Energy and Resource Management (B.A.), he completed a semester abroad at the Environmental Management Department of the City of Cape Town in South Africa. In his master’s degree, he specialized in Renewable Energy Management (M.Sc.), while his master’s thesis dealt with the opportunities and barriers of renewable energies for developing countries. He is fluent in German, English and Swahili.

RESEARCH AND WORK FOCUS

  • Accompanying social science research of energy projects

  • Qualitative research (interviews, workshops and research)

  • Management of international projects in the field of energy efficiency networks, including moderation, organization and implementation of project meetings

  • Stakeholder analyses and citizen participation in and for cities and neighborhoods, for example in the context of municipal heat planning

  • Scientific communication, public relations and training on stakeholder engagement
