Schleswig-Holstein heat transition strategy

Development of a strategy for the heat transition in Schleswig-Holstein

Client

Ministerium für Energiewende, Klimaschutz, Umwelt und Natur des Landes Schleswig-Holstein

Duration  March 2026 – July 2026

Background

The state of Schleswig-Holstein has committed to the goal of becoming climate neutral by 2040. The complete decarbonization of the heat supply in buildings is a key lever to achieve that goal, as the current heat supply is predominantly based on fossil fuels. An overarching heat transition strategy will be developed to drive this decarbonization forward at the state level.

Goals and Results

Several approaches will be used to develop fitting and feasible measures: Expert interviews will be conducted, existing data and studies will be reviewed, model projects and best practice examples will be evaluated, and strategic workshops will be held with various stakeholder groups.
The heat transition strategy will include measures for the successful implementation of the heat transition and provide guidance for state policy, municipalities, companies, and citizens.

Tasks of IREES

  • IREES is responsible for implementing the stakeholder participation process through a series of interviews and workshops.
  • IREES will also contribute significantly to the development, specification, and prioritization of fields of action and proposed measures, and is involved in the preparation of the final reports.
